How do you make your mind divert from something? The answer, I just figured out, is simple. Comcentrate on something else. Forget about diverting it. Dont keep thinking that you should not think about the thing that you are trying not to think about - this will only make things worse. Like the story of the king who wanted a cure to his baldness. A doctor prescribed an oil and asked the king to apply it, but on one condition - not to think about monkeys while applying it. Its said the King saw monkeys in all shapes and sizes whenever he opened the bottle of oil, until he threw the oil away in exasperation.
I do not agree with many principles - still I call them principles or ideals, because I accept that they are important to others. Each of us have a different perspective, and hence, different priorities. Its hard to talk and set a common ground for discussions when there are conflicting priorities. I never tell my priorities openly, probably because I'm not consciously aware of them. And when someone very close to you, like a blood-relation, breaks those ground rules (mine, not theirs - enter the emotional here) and strays from your principles, you cannot merely disapprove. The logical part in you says, "Excellent! I love the way (s)he has done it and is happy" or somethig like that... The emotional part (its funny) says, "what, i can't believe it!" over and over again... Why not? Even if you have been expecting something for months, the right brain (is the emotional seat on the right side?) just can't digest it.
Coming back after a digresion (and a happy truth thats currently eating me), I was saying how not to think of something. Think of something else. But make sure, when you are in the right state of mind(when you think the left brain is active), hack at what you want to avoid, think of why and why not, and drive the point home. But after sometime, you'll return to the earlier situation of "i can't believe it" especially if you are an emotional person. But engage in something completely unrelated to what you want to avoid. If you love programming, take an interesting problem and try to solve it. Or gossip, go overly anti-something, create a mild melodrama, or setup even a small fight ;)
Why else do you think I'm writing this post?
